A fascinating Iridescent Native Copper Specimen from Hubei, China – 湖北天然彩虹原生铜矿标本, featuring naturally occurring Native Copper with an attractive metallic lustre and striking iridescent rainbow-like colours across parts of its surface.

Native Copper is one of the relatively uncommon minerals that occurs naturally in its elemental metallic form, rather than being chemically combined with other elements. Its characteristic copper-red to reddish-brown metallic appearance makes it one of the most recognisable native-element minerals.

Hubei is an important mineral-producing region in China and has documented occurrences of Native Copper from several localities, including Fengjiashan Mine, Tonglushan Mine and Chengmenshan Mine. Fine crystallised and dendritic Native Copper specimens from these localities have been documented in mineral collections.

What makes this particular specimen especially eye-catching is its natural iridescent surface, which can reveal shades resembling gold, bronze, purple, blue, green and other colours depending on the angle of light.

This colourful optical effect gives the specimen a distinctive “rainbow copper” appearance, making it especially attractive as a display mineral.

Natural Native Copper specimens can develop different surface appearances through oxidation and interaction with their geological environment. Depending on the specimen and locality, Native Copper may also occur with associated copper minerals such as Cuprite and Delafossite.

Every specimen is naturally unique, with variations in metallic lustre, copper colour, iridescence, crystal formation, surface texture and matrix.
